Last year, bestselling erotic lesbian author Ruby Scott drew thirty-four women in their most intimate moments. This is the first eight, paired with the original ink portraits that began them.
Last year I sat down with a pen and started drawing women. O.
Thirty-four ink portraits in all, every one of them caught in private, every one a stranger I'd somehow already met.
So I asked the women who read my books to name them, and to tell me who she was before the ink met her skin.
This volume is the first eight. Eight erotic lesbian stories about women in the unguarded moment they stop managing their desire, and find themselves gloriously alive.
I drew them. You named them. They did the rest.
Volume One of four.
INSIDE VOLUME ONE
Shannon. Eleven years anchoring the network's late bulletin, and five Tuesdays now of leaving the side door unlocked at 10:45 for an extern she has run out of language to call a colleague.
Adeline. Newly arrived principal of a girls' boarding school six thousand feet above the Garhwal valley in 1920s India, undone in lamplight by a slim volume of Sappho left on her desk without a note.
Sienna. A US combat medic at 0200 in a desert shower block after a medevac that nearly cost her crew, and the Black Hawk pilot who flew them out.
Bailey. A half-Thai chef thirty floors above Bangkok, and the French sous-chef she hired knowing exactly what she was doing.
Rebecca. Afternoon office hours that stopped being office hours weeks ago. A constitutional law professor with an analytical streak, and a student who would do anything she asked.
Rowan. A converted cannery on a Pacific Northwest island, a single mother who has not let herself want anyone in six years, and the non-binary produce driver who arrives every Thursday on the eleven-fifteen ferry.
Vivienne. A Berlin ophthalmologist in a marriage of parallel schedules, and the sculptor whose face she held in her hands in the dark.
Valentina. A New Orleans bar owner who has spent seven years giving people the wanting and keeping the thing itself, until a guitar player from Frenchmen Street walked in and looked away first.

Full Description
A year ago Ruby Scott set herself a question: what does a woman look like in her most honest
moment, when nobody is watching her and she has stopped curating herself for anyone?
The answer was thirty-four ink portraits, drawn over the course of the year, every one of them
a stranger she had somehow already met. She gave them to the women who read her books
and asked them to do what she could not — to name these women, and to tell her who they
were before the ink met their skin.
O: Volume One is the first eight to be returned to her with names attached, and the first eight
stories she wrote in response.
Eight encounters. Eight intimate portraits printed alongside their stories. Eight women, every
one of them stepping out of the careful, contained life she has been managing and into the
truth of what she wants.
This is character-driven erotic sapphic fiction in its most stripped-back, most intimate form.
Atmospheric and literary. Written for readers who want the unspoken finally made plain, and
the heat that comes when a contained woman lets herself be known.
O: Volume One is the first of four illustrated sapphic anthologies. There are twenty-six more
women waiting.

The red pen has been uncapped for forty minutes and I haven't marked a word.
Tomorrow's rundown lies across the anchor desk in front of me, twenty-three items total, the
overnight ratings for tonight's bulletin clipped to the upper right corner so I can inform
tomorrow's editorial decisions with the discipline that has governed this newsroom for eleven
years. My governance. Eleven years of it and not a day missed.
There is a light on in the research bay.
It has not left my attention since the floor crew dispersed, since James, my floor manager for
nine of those eleven years, packed his bag without looking at me, since the studio contracted
to monitors and cold light and the distant mechanical rhythm from post-production two floors
below. I haven't looked directly at the research bay. I don't need to. I know whose light it is,
whose it has been on every one of the fourteen evenings I have extended my hours beyond
any editorial necessity I could credibly articulate.
Cara Walsh arrived six weeks ago on a Tuesday at nine-fifteen and disagreed with me in front
of seven people before she'd been inside the building forty minutes…

It never ceases to amaze me, when reading Ruby Scott’s books, how much research she must put into them.
Not only did she draw 32 women at ‘ that’ moment, she also asked her followers on social media to name them and give a brief background for each, then took inspiration from those prompts and created eight completely different, believable, and wonderful short stories for this volume which is impressive.
I imagine for this series of books it would be even harder to achieve with the shorter length and so many completely different characters, making them sound as plausible as possible, with occupations or hobbies described so well that you feel you understand just by reading these stories. Not to mention each story is taking place in locations and settings around the world, described so clearly, you can picture them vividly and see yourself there with the characters.
Also, the heat in this book is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Impatiently waiting for book 2 now 🥰
Thank you so much for this wonderful review.
I’m genuinely touched that you noticed the process behind O: Volume One, because it really was built from that unusual collaboration between myself and readers. Those prompts, names, and fragments of imagined lives became the starting point for something much larger, and it was a real joy turning them into fully formed stories.
I’m especially pleased you picked up on the challenge of the shorter form. With short stories, there’s no room for excess, so everything has to work harder: character, voice, setting, and emotional tone all have to land quickly while still feeling lived-in. Knowing that those worlds felt vivid and believable to you means a great deal.
And I love that you mentioned the settings too. Each location was chosen to feel distinct, almost like stepping into a different atmosphere every time, so it’s lovely to hear that sense of place came through clearly.
As for the heat… I’ll simply say I’m very glad it delivered what it was meant to.
Thank you for reading so closely, for your kind words, and for your impatience for book two. That’s always a very good sign.

This is the first volume in a whole series of shorts, each about a different woman, each inspired by a reader and masterfully brought to life by Ruby Scott, and each illustrated by the author herself.
O should come with a fire hazard warning. Given the effect it has on its readers, though, waterproof packaging might be the more pressing concern.
O will make you squirm. It is ridiculously hot – one of the most scorching things Ruby Scott has ever written. Yet, as always, it never lacks plot.
What makes the collection memorable, is how much emotional and personal transformation is packed into each story.
These women started out as faces on a page, drawings already full of life, and are now made tangible in the stories Ruby Scott gives them.
The woman who is discipline personified, finally giving in to her desires. The woman who had to be in complete darkness to see herself. Or the woman finally letting herself not just want but have. Those are just three examples. All these women have built something – a newsroom, a school, a kitchen, a bar, a career, a safe life – and have organised their lives around it. In all their stories, desire arrives with enough force to dismantle that. And if that isn't the sexiest thing, I don't know what is.
These are stories that reward rereading. I certainly keep finding new details, new connections, and new favourite lines every time I return to them. As always, there are plenty of masterfully crafted sentences to stop and read twice, three times. Just to appreciate them from all angles.
O is yet another example of Ruby Scott's excellent writing. She doesn't just deliver heat – she has a whole flavour profile built on it that will tickle your tongue.
Thank you Finn so much for this incredible review. ❤️
I laughed out loud at the suggestion that O should come with a fire hazard warning. I suspect the waterproof packaging comment may be even more accurate. 😅🔥
What means the most to me, though, is that you saw exactly what I hoped these stories would become. The heat is certainly there, but underneath it are women finding themselves, changing, risking something, and allowing desire to disrupt lives they thought were already settled.
These women began as drawings, little more than ink and imagination, so hearing that they now feel tangible and real is one of the greatest compliments you could give me.
Thank you Finn for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review, and for noticing the details, the connections, and the lines hidden between the lines. Knowing the stories reward rereading is a gift every author hopes for.
And now I may have to add 'whole flavour profile built on it' to my list of favourite compliments ever received.
Take some beautiful drawings of women’s faces at the most intimate of moments, the artists request to put names and back stories to these faces, the response from readers who took on the responsibility of this in earnest, and what is the result? Ruby Scott has taken her drawings and those ideas and turned them into something exquisite, magnificent, and breathtaking and with the simplest and most perfect book title ever 🥰
The O Collection - Volume One is, well, just brilliant! Each story is so evocative, passionate, moving and even thought provoking, and let’s face it, we all want to visit Hera’s art installation now,😂🥵and that is one intensely clever piece of writing.
As always I love the personalised inscription at the beginning and the little doodle that goes with it. It adds to the buzz of excitement I get when I open the book to read it, no matter how many times that is!
It is so good waiting for the following volumes is going to be unbearable 🖤
Thank you so much! ❤️ I loved seeing these women come to life through readers' ideas, so I'm delighted the stories resonated with you. And yes, I think Hera's installation may have left quite a few readers feeling a little warm under the collar! 🔥
Well… that was a thoroughly indecent little masterpiece! 🔥
Ruby Scott’s ‘O’ series just ripped up the rule book on erotic shorts - you heard it here first!
Yes, this book gives us eight incredible women and eight exquisitely intimate moments, but reducing it to just erotica feels wildly unfair. This was an experience for me. It was immersive, sensual, and unexpectedly artful in a way that completely caught me off guard.
The fact that Ruby not only penned these stories but sketched the characters too - outrageous talent! It added such a unique layer of intimacy, as though I was being invited even further into her imagination.
And the range? Glorious. Different settings, different dynamics, different continents and tropes! I literally devoured every page of this book.
If you enjoy erotica with substance, style, and enough heat to ruin your evening plans… buckle up. This ride is fire! 🔥
Now the countdown is on for Volume 2! 👏🏼
Thank you so much! ❤️ I'm still smiling at 'thoroughly indecent little masterpiece' and 'ripped up the rule book'!
I'm delighted you enjoyed the stories, the drawings, and the variety of women and experiences in the collection. Knowing it felt immersive and memorable means the world to me.
And don't worry, Volume Two is on its way! 🔥
These stories have absolutely everything: scorching heat, heart, and the whole panorama of desire distilled into a single moment. Eight different women, eight unique stories, all connected by the one thing every woman fears and craves: losing yourself to desire, only to find yourself when you finally let go. This was such a unique project, crafting stories inspired by original drawings, and the results were beyond anything I imagined. I cannot wait for the other volumes.
Thank you so much for this beautiful review! ❤️
I'm delighted you enjoyed the women, their stories, and the journey from drawing to page. 'Losing yourself to desire, only to find yourself when you finally let go' is such a lovely way of describing what connects these stories.
Thank you for taking a chance on this unusual little project, and don't worry, the next volumes are on their way! 🔥
