Best Sapphic Thriller Books
Most sapphic fiction asks what it will take for two women to be together.
A sapphic thriller asks what it will take for one of them to survive.
This is the part of my catalogue where the suspense leads and the romance, if it shows up at all, has to earn its place at the table. Two series, one Goldie-finalist standalone, five books. The romance does not save anyone here.
What Is a Sapphic Thriller?
A sapphic thriller is a thriller where two women sit at the centre and the suspense is the engine, not the subplot.
That sounds simple. In practice it splits into three branches:
- Psychological thriller: the wife you woke up next to may not be your wife
- Spy thriller: the woman you trust is paid by someone else to be untrustworthy
- Crime and suspense: the closed-circle mystery where everyone in the room has a reason
What runs through all three is the same. Two women at the centre, and a relationship that gets tested by the threat instead of saving anyone from it.
My catalogue covers all three branches. Five books across two series and one standalone.
A 2025 Goldie Finalist
No Way Out was named a 2025 GCLS Goldie Award finalist. The category placement matters because it confirms what I had hoped about my own work: that a sapphic suspense novel where the romance does not take the wheel can still be recognised by a community that loves romance. The Goldies have not historically been generous to thrillers. The fact that they were generous to this one tells me there is room in the genre for more of us.
My Sapphic Thriller Books
I write in three streams. Each book stands alone, though each series rewards reading in order if you fall for the world.
The Velvet Storm Series
Two psychological thrillers about who you trust when the woman closest to you stops being who she was. The Velvet Storm series lives in the slow horror of recognising that something is wrong before you have the words to name it.
The Stranger Within Me
Book One
The monster I am hunting sleeps in my bed, wearing my lover's face. The series opener — a psychological thriller where the protagonist's love and her investigation will not stay in separate rooms.
Tropes: psychological thriller, domestic suspense, unreliable narrator, dangerous lover, identity, contemporary.
Wild Hearts
Book Two
My wife became perfect overnight. Turns out, she was not my wife at all. The Velvet Storm world expands here, into stranger-than-you-think identity territory and the long shadow of book one.
Tropes: psychological thriller, doppelganger, marriage suspense, identity, unreliable narrator, contemporary.
The Art of Deception Series
If you have read Desire's Truth, you already know Suzette Conner Wakeman. The billionaire dominatrix who bought a company for the price of one night of submission, and the character readers have written to me about more than any other since the book launched.
The Art of Deception is her own story. Two books that go back to the thirty years she spent as Moscow's weapon, and forward into what a woman becomes when she finally points that weapon at the people who made her.
The Turning
Book One
She has seduced diplomats, spies, and killers. This time, the game might turn on her. The series opener — a spy thriller where the protagonist's skill set is exactly what puts her in the most danger.
Tropes: spy thriller, espionage, international intrigue, dangerous attraction, double agent, contemporary.
The Reckoning
Book Two
Suzette traded Moscow for a vineyard and a wife she refuses to lose. When thirty refugee women vanish into illegal drug trials, she is the only one willing to fight for them. The reckoning comes for us all.
Tropes: spy thriller, defector, rescue mission, conspiracy, married protagonist, old flames return, action, contemporary.
No Way Out
Standalone, GCLS Goldie finalist 2025
No Way Out is the standalone psychological thriller I wrote with my Susie Fleming co-credit.
Six corporate rivals are stranded in a remote mountain retreat with a killer who never left. The CEO at the centre of it built her company on detecting deepfakes, and now finds she cannot read the people in her own room. A closed-circle sapphic thriller, written because I wanted to do suspense without letting the romance take the wheel.
Tropes: closed-circle mystery, corporate thriller, locked-room mystery, deepfakes, ensemble cast, Goldie finalist 2025, contemporary.
Where to Start
Start with No Way Out. It is the Goldie-finalist standalone, which means you get the most-recognised work without having to commit to a series to find out whether my thrillers are for you.
If you would rather start a series:
- Stranger Within Me for psychological suspense
- The Turning for international spy thriller, and the first time you meet Suzette Conner-Wakeman in her own story
Each book stands alone, but reading either series in order is rewarded.
Perfect For Fans Of
Sapphic thriller is a small enough genre that most readers in it have read most of the people writing in it. If any of these names are already on your shelf, my thrillers are built for the same reader:
- Lee Winter — the gold standard for sapphic suspense and morally complex leads
- E.J. Noyes — character-driven sapphic with strong workplace and high-stakes settings
- Milena McKay — darker sapphic intensity, often with thriller-adjacent threads
- Gerri Hill — long-running sapphic mystery and suspense backlist
- Radclyffe — pioneering sapphic across crime, thriller, and emergency-services fiction
- Cari Hunter — police procedural and crime with strong sapphic leads
If you have read across most of this list, the Velvet Storm, Art of Deception, and No Way Out are built for you.
