Chapter One Look Inside
Chapter One Look Inside
The gallery pulsed with an energy Greer Morrigan Dubhán had long ago learned to filter out. Laughter bounced off the pristine white walls, punctuated by the chime of champagne glasses and extravagant use of words like 'transcendent' and 'provocative.' Greer positioned herself near the entrance, her lean frame impeccably dressed in tailored black trousers and a crimson silk blouse. The whole scene was like the start of a clichéd sapphic romance, she thought wryly.
She touched her dark hair, swept up in a simple yet elegant style, which hinted at an effortless sophistication. This was her trademark armour—minimalist, intentional, and alluring.
She rarely attended events like this. Galleries were often too crowded, too noisy, too pretentious, and too full of inflated egos. But tonight marked three hundred and ninety-one years since the torture of her transformation. Since hatred turned love into hunger. The date always drew her out of seclusion, as if her cursed body sought to commemorate its own making. Plus, Thomas, the beautiful soul he was, had promised there would be a buffet, and she was a sucker for a tiny canapé. She took a sip of red wine, its aroma hinting at blackberry and oak, as her eyes scanned the room, observing but never lingering.
Until she walked in.
Greer's attention caught on a figure across the room who seemed to shimmer. The woman was petite, but her presence filled the space like the comforting aroma of fresh bacon rolls -- warm, inviting, and utterly irresistible. Her dress, a riot of colours that sang against the muted tones of the gallery, swirled around her ankles as she moved with a dancer's fluidity. Greer caught the glint of a silver pendant nestled in the hollow of her throat, and a delicate scent of sandalwood and paint clung to her. Chestnut hair, reminiscent of autumn leaves just before they fall, albeit less withered, framed a face alive with passion and a playful curiosity that made Greer smile.
Her heightened senses stirred. The air thickened, carrying a whisper of something warmer, more enticing. It wasn't just the woman's perfume -- though undeniably intoxicating -- but her energy, her vitality. Greer's heart raced, a rare and dangerous sign.
'Get it together,' she murmured, although she knew restraint may be nothing more than a memory tonight.
'Talking to yourself, Greer? The party must be a real thrill,' a voice interrupted from her left.
Greer turned, arching an eyebrow at the man who had sidled up next to her. Thomas, the gallery owner, moved with a grace that only their kind possessed. His expensive suit screamed wealth, and his perfectly practised smile held centuries of carefully maintained charm. Like her, he wore his humanity like a well-tailored mask, though they had an unspoken agreement never to acknowledge their shared nature in public.
'Just taking in the sights,' Greer replied, her tone cool. Her eyes flicked back to the woman, who was now examining a large abstract canvas, blissfully unaware of the scrutiny.
Thomas followed her focus, to one of the three artists whose work was on display, his smile widening. 'Ah, Freya Solasta. The art world's new darling, so they say. Quite the talent, isn't she?'
'Talented, indeed,' Greer murmured, though her focus wasn't on the art.
Thomas laughed. 'I wouldn't get any ideas, Greer. She's far too gentle for someone like you.'
Greer's jaw tightened. 'And what exactly is that supposed to mean?'
'Only that you have a reputation for being rather... intense.' He gave a vague wave of his hand.
Greer didn't bother to respond. Instead, she finished her wine and set the empty glass on a nearby table, her attention drawn back to Freya. She had centuries of practice in the art of discretion, but tonight, she felt uncharacteristically reckless.
When Freya finally moved, it was with a dancer's deliberation, her dress swaying with each step as she moved to another display. Greer found herself gravitating closer, staying just out of sight, yet close enough to savour every detail: the way Freya's fingers grazed her lips in thought, the subtle curve of her mouth as she explained the intention behind each piece to an inquisitive potential buyer.
It wasn't until Freya paused at a smaller painting in the corner of the room that Greer's resolve wavered. The artwork was a chaos of blues and greens, turbulent yet strangely soothing. It was a submission from another artist. Freya cocked her head, her expression softening, and Greer couldn't resist.

In the shadows of Edinburgh's ancient streets, architect Greer Morrigan Dubhán has survived for centuries as a Baobhan Sith—a Scottish vampire who feeds on blood and pleasure. When she encounters rising artist Freya Solasta, their attraction is immediate and dangerous, pulling them into a passionate affair that threatens to expose Greer's darkest secrets.
Freya possesses a rare gift—the ability to see the supernatural patterns that connect all beings—and soon discovers the truth behind Greer's immortality. Rather than fleeing, she's drawn deeper into Greer's world of eternal hunger and forbidden desires, willingly offering herself as sustenance and lover.
But their newfound happiness shatters when Agnes Lasair, a vengeful zealot transformed by righteous fire centuries ago, declares war on all supernatural beings. As Edinburgh erupts in violence and ancient sanctuaries fall, Freya realizes that the silver markings on Greer's skin aren't symbols of a curse but a forgotten language—one that might hold the key to their salvation.
With the help of Greer's former lover turned ally, Dior, and other supernatural beings awakening to their true purpose, Freya must unlock the power hidden within herself before Agnes's corrupting influence destroys everything they love. In a final confrontation on the same hill where their story began four centuries ago, they'll discover that love freely given is the most powerful magic of all—one that might transform not just themselves, but the very fabric of reality.
Blood Marks is a darkly sensual tale of immortal passion, ancient curses, and the extraordinary power of choosing love over fear, even when that choice demands the ultimate sacrifice.

This was a slow burn, but also a tease that felt uncomfortable - that ultimately ended up with a MC finding strength when it first looked like something else. I don’t want to be too specific and ruin it for you! It explored some character facets that Ruby is really good at and I enjoyed the paranormal bits as well.
The parallels with life as we know it - good & bad, right vs might - were painful at times, but the resolution with characters recognizing how to reconcile imperfections and how we all grow if given the opportunity/understanding/support was worth it.
Thank you so much for your review! ❤️
I'm delighted you enjoyed the journey, especially the character growth and the paranormal elements. I always love exploring complicated women finding strength in unexpected places, so it means a lot that those themes resonated with you.
Thank you for reading and for taking the time to share your thoughts.
I love this story. It’s different to the ones I have read from Ruby so far but she writes so well and weaves such a compelling story it draws you deep into the supernatural world of the Baobahn Sith and gives a lovely new meaning to hunger and desire. The polyamorous relationship between the main characters is a great change too and is very hot! Each main character has distinctive personalities but they fit together perfectly to form connections of the deepest and purest form. I love a good story that combines myth with the “real” world well and this certainly does that. It carries you along brilliantly whilst experiencing danger, fear, grief, love and compassion and it builds to an ending that we could really do with in our current time. Just love it!
Thank you so much for this.
I’m really pleased to hear Blood Marks pulled you into that mythic world and that the Baobahn Sith and the themes of hunger and desire felt so vivid for you. It means a great deal to know the blend of the supernatural with the real world worked in a way that kept you fully immersed.
I’m especially glad the dynamic between the characters resonated with you, and that the connections between them felt strong, natural, and meaningful as the story unfolded.
Thank you for taking the time to share this, it really does mean a lot.

Blood Marks was such an incredible read! I’d heard great things about it, so I had high expectations and it literally smashed all of them!
Opening with an interesting telling of Scottish folk law and an intriguing take on witches burned at the stake, I was immediately hooked and couldn’t wait to delve into this fantastical world.
I fell in love with every character, each one so wonderfully written. I honestly can’t choose a favourite! Greer’s broody mysterious nature will draw you in, Freya’s sweet but determined nature will have you falling in love and Dior’s hilarious one liners will give you all the comic relief you need in this dark tale! Together they are the ultimate powerhouse and the chemistry that all three of them share, will have you reaching for that fan! 🔥🌶️
A true lesson in love, acceptance and hope, can’t believe I waited so long to read it!
Thank you so much for this wonderful review.
I love that you mentioned the opening because Blood Marks began with that blend of Scottish folklore, history, and mythology, and I was hoping readers would fall into the world as quickly as I did while writing it.
I'm also smiling at your description of Greer, Freya, and Dior because you've captured them perfectly. Greer does have a habit of lurking mysteriously in corners, Freya has a quiet strength that often surprises people, and Dior refuses to take anything too seriously for very long. Writing the dynamic between the three of them was one of my favourite parts of the book.
What makes me happiest, though, is that beneath all the magic, danger, and chemistry, you connected with the themes of love, acceptance, and hope. At its heart, that's what Blood Marks has always been about.
Thank you for taking a chance on the book, even if it took a little while to get there, and thank you for leaving such a thoughtful review.

Gripping, powerful, spellbinding. This tale kept me on my toes from the very first page. I have a particular passion for tales that weave folklore and fable into their very being, offering unique and captivating takes on myth and legend. And Blood Marks is probably the best I've read so far.
With only a true artist's passion and precision, Ruby Scott paints a world where presence of the supernatural is as natural as breathing. Where the power of choosing hope, of choosing love, is the only thing that really matters.
This is a story of "ordinary women making extraordinary choices." It celebrates the beauty, the power, the passion, the strength that comes from choosing love. You'll laugh, you'll cry. You'll rage, you'll grieve. But ultimately, you'll hope. Absolutely brilliant from start to finish.
Thank you so much for this incredible review.
As someone who has always been fascinated by folklore, myth, and the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of the world, reading this genuinely means a lot to me. Blood Marks was a book of big ideas, old legends, complicated women, and impossible choices, so hearing that it resonated with you so deeply is wonderful.
I particularly love that you highlighted hope and love at the heart of the story. There are witches, vampires, ancient histories, betrayals, and more than a little chaos, but underneath all of it, Blood Marks has always been about the choices we make and the people we choose to stand beside.
And 'ordinary women making extraordinary choices' is such a beautiful way of describing it. Those are exactly the kinds of characters I love to write. Women who aren't perfect, aren't fearless, but who keep moving forward anyway.
Thank you for your kind words, for taking this journey with Greer, Freya, and Dior, and for leaving such a thoughtful review. Reviews like this make all those hours staring at a keyboard worthwhile.

The sign of a great author is when the book forces you to stop midway and just marvel at the incredible brain that dreamed up all that you’re reading. This is exactly what I experienced when reading Blood Marks. It isn’t a book that draws from personal experience, but rather it grabs imagination and creativity by the balls and absolutely runs with it!
I also love the fact that this book is mostly poly, bringing much needed representation and visibility for the community.
Blood Marks captures tortured broken hearts who fear hope but soon realise that hope and love are all that truly matter. Throw in the whirlwind artist who sees far too much and can take down the highest of walls, and you’re left with a riveting tale that you won’t want to put down! Trust me, my heavy eyelids at 1am can attest to this.
This book weaves together passion, fantasy, fear and love. And by the end, it leaves readers full of understanding and heart, achieved only through the vulnerability of complex characters. What’s not to love?! I’ve already started recommending this to friends and will continue to do so. This story is too much fun not to be read and the ending is everything! 👏🏼
Thank you so much for this incredible review.
I have to admit, the idea of a reader stopping halfway through a book just to wonder what on earth was happening inside my brain is both flattering and slightly concerning.
Blood Marks was one of those stories that arrived with absolutely no intention of behaving itself. It demanded witches, folklore, ancient grudges, impossible choices, complicated relationships, and women who were determined to fight for the people they loved. I simply tried to keep up.
I'm particularly pleased that you mentioned the poly representation. It was important to me that the relationships in this book felt authentic, meaningful, and rooted in the same themes that run through all of my stories: trust, vulnerability, connection, and love in its many forms.
And yes, underneath all the magic, danger, passion, and chaos, Blood Marks is ultimately a story about hope. About choosing it when it would be easier not to. About choosing love despite the risks. For me, that's always been the beating heart of the book.
Thank you for staying up far later than was probably sensible, for recommending the story to your friends, and for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review. Knowing these characters and this world found a place in your heart means more than I can say.
